Sam Rodell, Spokane, Washington Architect. For me, site design and building design are not separate concerns - they are intertwined aspects of any commission. Architects are thought of as building designers, but in reality we design the built environment. Home design and site design are not separate issues.
Thoughtful, site inspired architectural design. Spokane architecture firms and design architects work in a market that has little use for elitism or abstract theories, but does recognize and value good design. The construction industry is dominated by industrialized approaches to construction. Architectural elements that convey the story of their creation at the hand of a craftsman push back against the prevalence of prefabricated commodities that make up most mainstream construction.
Water from a naturally occuring spring on the site is capitalized on with a water feature that cascades down the site, literally under the main level living spaces of the home, which are supported by a lower level split into two separate sections. Custom home design is as much about the land the home occupies as it is about the building.
